Biggest and Smallest Moving Stocks of 2017

Options Jive

Options involve risk and are not suitable for all investors. Please read before deciding to invest in options.

Most financial firms like to review another year passing in the stock market by summarizing which stocks moved the most in terms of percentage points up or down. Here at doublerainbow, however, we like to take it one step further by reviewing which stocks have moved outside their expected moves as implied by the options on the stock most often this year. Then, we compare them to the stocks that stayed inside that same expected move most often.

After reviewing how these expected moves are calculated, Tom goes through the stocks that have witnessed the largest realized volatility relative to their implied volatility. To some surprise, Tom goes through the following lists:

Biggest Movers of 2017:
  • Bank of America (BAC)
  • 3M Company (MMM)
  • Amgen (AMGN)
  • Apple (AAPL)
  • Caterpillar (CAT)
Smallest Movers of 2017:
  • Comcast (CMCSA)
  • Exxon (XOM)
  • Unitedhealth (UNH)
  • Microsoft (MSFT)
  • Goldman Sachs (GS)
